*SPOILER ALERT* If you haven’t seen this movie, stop right here. Unless you are the type who likes to know a lot about a film before watching, then please read on. I’m more than a year late to the party, I know. This movie was released around April of 2022, but how do I love thee. Let me count the ways.
It is a bundle of the kind of wonderfully weird that makes my toes curl in delight, an exploration of the multi-verse which includes Raccacoonie, a hilarious parody of Ratatouille, and a world where everyone has hot dog fingers. It’s a realm where pinky kung fu is strong, Stephanie Hsu rocks a demented glitter Elvis costume, and Jamie Lee Curtis is a frumpy, borderline psychotic IRS agent fond of tangerine orange, polyester turtlenecks. And let’s not forget the perfect casting that brought about the return of Ke Huy Quan to the big screen, who is known for playing Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, or how great Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) and James Hong (Blade Runner) are in this.
Wrapped inside the enigma of Everything Everywhere All At Once, is a story of acceptance, of learning compassion for ourselves and others, of shaking loose feelings of being inadequate or not being enough, and releasing fear of changes that are beyond our control. It’s the ultimate message that no matter how ordinary each of us may think we are, in truth, we are an important part of the whole, interconnected in ways we cannot understand, and powerful beyond belief.
